When Lordina Came to Madina

Actually, I don’t know when Lordina came to Madina. It was probably a long time ago. I know she had her salon at Madina New Road, and she was pretty well liked, as most hairdressers/beauticians/stylists are.
Fast forward to today, 29th October, 2012. My mother and I were coming from the Las Palmas area ( the fufu joint.) when we saw a large angry-looking policeman yelling at some troski and taxi drivers.
“Get off the road!”,”Stupid, is that where to load?”, “You with the pig snout for a mouth, get your empty Milo tin of a taxi out of here!”

Now, mama and I were pleasantly surprised. If you know the Madina Las Palmas, you’ll know that it’s in a very congested area, right at the main entrance to the Madina market and opposite the Madina police station. You’ll also probably have wondered how such mayhem can exist right opposite a police station. So mama and I were pleasantly surprised, because we assumed the police had decided to fix their own backyard for a change.
Unfortunately, we were wrong.
Our policemen and woman, were clearing a path for Mrs. Lordina Mahama, first lady of the republic of Ghana, and soon enough, we saw her pretty, kind face. She was surrounded by bodyguards and some very focused-looking young men and women in NDC party t-shirts. Bringing up the rear were 3 lovely black SUVs and a pick-up all bearing our president’s handsome, dignified face.
As mama and I watched the procession, we smiled and wondered if Lordina ever thought she would get here. From a beauty salon to Madina market!
Another thing that came up, (which we did not dwell on for long, since it was so unimportant) was if Lordina had seen and smelt the gutters. The famous Madina gutters, overflowing with refuse, the heaps of rubbish all around, the kayayei… The tired-looking Market women. Like I said, we didn’t dwell on it for long. More important was the question…

“Wow, is that Vlisco she’s wearing?”
